Short-Form Hooks That Earn the Next Second
A hook earns attention by making a specific promise and showing why the next few seconds are worth watching. Use this framework to start a Reel, Short, or TikTok without exaggerated claims.
Start with one precise outcome
Open with the useful change, answer, or comparison the viewer will receive.
- Replace “You need to see this” with a specific outcome.
- Name the audience when it helps a viewer decide quickly.
- Avoid promising results you cannot demonstrate in the video.
Pair the promise with proof
Show the result, before-and-after, or first step while the hook is spoken.
- Put the finished frame, draft, or workflow on screen in the first beat.
- Use on-screen text to repeat the core promise in plain language.
- Cut setup that does not help the viewer understand the outcome.
Review the first three seconds
Watch the opening without sound and then with sound before publishing.
- Can a viewer identify the topic from the first frame?
- Does the opening sentence make one promise rather than several?
- Does the next scene immediately begin to deliver on that promise?
